WORLD'S STRANGEST LAWS

Did you know it's illegal in France to name a pig Napoleon? Or that in Ohio you're not allowed to get a fish drunk? Alex Wade celebrates the spirit of the silly season with a list of the world's most ridiculous laws.

25. It is illegal for a cab in the City of London to carry rabid dogs or corpses.

24. It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament.

23. It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside down.
22. In France, it is forbidden to call a pig Napoleon.

21. Under the UK’s Tax Avoidance Schemes Regulations 2006, it is illegal not to tell the taxman anything you don’t want him to know, though you don’t have to tell him anything you don’t mind him knowing.

20. In Alabama, it is illegal for a driver to be blindfolded while driving a vehicle.

19. In Ohio, it is against state law to get a fish drunk.

18. Royal Navy ships that enter the Port of London must provide a barrel of rum to the Constable of the Tower of London.

17. In the UK, a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants – even, if she so requests, in a policeman’s helmet.

16. In Lancashire, no person is permitted after being asked to stop by a constable on the seashore to incite a dog to bark.

15. In Miami, Florida, it is illegal to skateboard in a police station.

14. In Indonesia, the penalty for masturbation is decapitation.

13. In England, all men over the age of 14 must carry out two hours of longbow practice a day.

12. In London, Freemen are allowed to take a flock of sheep across London Bridge without being charged a toll; they are also allowed to drive geese down Cheapside.

11. In San Salvador, drunk drivers can be punished by death before a firing squad.

10. In the UK, a man who feels compelled to urinate in public can do so only if he aims for his rear wheel and keeps his right hand on his vehicle.

9. In Florida, unmarried women who parachute on Sundays can be jailed.

8. In Kentucky, it is illegal to carry a concealed weapon more than six-feet long.

7. In Chester, Welshmen are banned from entering the city before sunrise and from staying after sunset.

6. In the city of York, it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow.

5. In Boulder, Colorado, it is illegal to kill a bird within the city limits and also to “own” a pet – the town’s citizens, legally speaking, are merely “pet minders”.

4. In Vermont, women must obtain written permission from their husbands to wear false teeth.

3. In London, it is illegal to flag down a taxi if you have the plague.

2. In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman’s genitals but is forbidden from looking directly at them during the examination; he may only see their reflection in a mirror.

1. The head of any dead whale found on the British coast is legally the property of the King; the tail, on the other hand, belongs to the Queen - in case she needs the bones for her corset.

THE ELECTRIC CAR THAT'S FASTER THAN A FERRARI!

It can outrun a Ferrari and is swifter than a Porsche...

But you won't find this mean machine guzzling gallons of gas - it's powered by a battery.

The new 700 bhp two-seater Lightning is made in Britain and can reach 60mph in less than four seconds.

AdvertisementIt takes a Porsche 911 S and a Ferrari 575 Maranello 4.1 seconds to match that speed.

At £150,000, it's the same price as the Maranello and more expensive than the £100,000 Porsche - but it'll save owners thousands on fuel and is exempt from road tax and congestion charge. And think of the benefits to the environment.

Bosses at the Peterborough-based Lightning Car Company reckon the motor will cost £10,000 a year less to run than a high-powered Audi RS4.

Its revolutionary NanoSafe battery has a range of 250 miles, takes just 10 minutes to charge and lasts 12 years.

Lcc technical director Arthur Wolstenholme said: "Ten, or even five years ago, electric power was dismissed as a poor substitute for petrol, diesel or LPG.

"But electric motor and battery technologies have been developed that will enable the Lightning to demonstrate a performance that exceeds some of today's petrol cars.
"Our electric power should outstrip the response rates and driveability of most exotic performance super cars."

The Lightning is expected to be available at the end of the year.

FORGET PLASMA AND LCD TV - THE LASER TV IS COMING!

Laser TV --------------------vs------------------ Plasma TV

Launched worldwide from Sydney, Australia yesterday by laser and wireless company Arasor, they aren't actually launching a new television, but a new technology that uses a laser to display images on your TV screen.

Instead of using a DLP (digital light processing) chip, or an electron gun as used in 'regular' CRT (cathode ray tube), or the display technologies used in LCD (liquid crystal display) or plasma TV technology, Arasor have developed a laser display engine to beam images onto your screen, with astounding benefits, including an incredibly rich colour range far exceeding conventional plasma and LCD TVs.

You can't buy a Laser TV in stores yet, but 8 consumer electronics firms have partnered with Arasor and will be demonstrating Laser TVs at January's CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, with units set to be available in stores by late 2007 or early 2008.

According to Arasor, Laser TVs:
- Are half the weight and half the cost of plasma and LCD TVs
- Have 75% less power output than many plasmas and LCDs
- Are very thin, like most plasmas and LCDs
- Have a very wide colour gamut showing more than twice the range of colours that existing plasma and LCD TVs can display. This is important because even though the latest plasma and LCD TVs can display quite stunning colour, especially when compared with earlier models, they only display about half the colour range the human eye can see. Laser TVs change this forever.
- With small devices such as phones, PDAs and video cameras, a laser projector can beam an image from the device onto a wall, with the same amazing colour reproduction.
- Have a 50,000 hour life (similar to plasma and LCD TVs which are rated at approximately 60,000 hours, and much greater than most projectors which have a lamp life of 3,000 to 4,000 hours)
- Offer almost constant 100% power output from the laser over the 50,000 hour lifespan, meaning a clear, bright and sharp image for the life of the Laser TV without needing recalibration for slowly degrading light and colour output (as would happen with plasma, LCDs and projectors)

While we only saw one prototype model at the launch, Arasor says that a number of prototypes have been made and are with their consumer electronics partners.

The screen we saw offered 1080i HDTV output, with 1080p models to arrive. They'll be fully compatible with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players, the XBox 360, the PS3, HDTV set-top boxes, your PC and virtually any other device that can currently plug into a TV.

Legendary rock trio the Police delivered a crowd-pleasing, high-energy performance in Vancouver during the kickoff Monday night of their reunion tour.

Singer and bassist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland belted out hit song after hit song, delighting 20,000 fans at General Motors Place for more than two hours.

Celebrity fans such as actress Penelope Cruz and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder were among the audience, ranging from fans who weren't even born when the Police split in 1984, to nostalgic 50-somethings who last saw the group in the early 1980s.

A collective roar of approval met many of the band's tunes, including concert opener Message in a Bottle and crowd pleaser Roxanne. Though many songs were slightly rearranged by the consummate trio, the audience warmly welcomed the entire set.

Sting, Summers and Copeland — whose relationship has been rocky over the years — also appeared to enjoy themselves while performing against the stage's simple backdrop and set.

After a second Vancouver concert on Wednesday, the band will proceed with the first North American leg of its tour before heading to Europe in the late summer and fall. The Police are also expected to add dates in South America, Japan and Australia by early 2008.

It's the trio's first tour since 1984, when they broke up following the final Australian date of the Synchronicity world tour.

Over the years, the three musicians have occasionally reunited for one-off performances. They reunited at the Grammy Awards in February, where they announced this current tour.
