5 YEARS OLD AND PREGNANT - THE STORY OF LINA MEDINA

Few cases have stunned as much as the story of Lina Medina, who is the youngest recorded mother in medical history.
Aged just 5 years, 7 months and 21 days, Medina gave birth to a baby boy way back in 1939.

Fearing their daughter had a serious tumor as her abdominal size kept increasing, the parents of Lina took their daughter to the city hospital after the Peruvian village doctors couldn’t figure out the reason of Lina’s pains.
When she arrived at the city’s hospital, Lina Medina’s parents were stunned when the doctors told them their five year old daughter is seven months pregnant.
Dr Gerardo Lozada took the young girl to Lima, the capital city of Peru, prior to surgery to confirm that Lina is in fact bearing a child.
A few weeks later, on May 14, 1939, Lina gave birth to a boy by caesarean section. The historic birth The surgery was performed by Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu, with Dr. Colretta providing anesthesia.
Miraculously, her baby boy was quite healthy and was named Gerardo, after her doctor.
Weighing just 2.7kg, Gerardo turned up to become a normal healthy child. He was led to believe that Lina is his sister, until he was 10 years of age, when he was told 15 year old Lina was his mother.
Researchers say that Lina never gave any indication if the pregnancy occurred in the usual natural way or who was the father of the child. Lina's father was arrested on suspicion of rape and incest, but was later released due to lack of evidence.
Until now, Lina Medina is still the youngest mother recorded in the history books. Gerardo Medina died in 1979, aged 40, due to a disease of the bone marrow.
